We wanted to go climbing. Meret, before agreeing to take the assignment in South Africa, checked options and one of the really promising ones was Waterval-Boven. It is well known spot with great rock with loads of sport routes. In addition it’s only 2h30min drive from Johannesburg airport and is quite close to Kruger national park so perfect for a few rest days on Safari.
We’ve spent first 3days and later another 2days in Boven. Climbed in the major areas, you can find the topo here : http://www.climbing.co.za/wiki/Waterval_Boven
Climbing is really good, but it takes a day to get used to the rock and style. I’ve onsighted a few 6c(+)’s and lead a 7a, being close to a few more and even a 7b (fell on a last crux move on the second attempt).
We stayed first with Rock’n’Rope they have a nice little hostel, and afterwards in the campground on Tranquitas. Both places have their pros and cons.
